I was brought up a Baltimore Orioles fan. I was more into them when I was younger and I haven't gone to as many games in the past few years, but were they to make the playoffs, I would definitely be rooting for them and losing some sleep.
I married into a family of Boston Red Sox fans. My father-in-law grew up in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and lived within walking distance from the stadium there. He has instilled an appreciation for this team in his two sons as well. Since moving to Maryland, my father-in-law has had season tickets for the O's, but his and his sons' true allegiance will always be with the Red Sox.
This having been said, I implore the powers that be to please somehow make the Red Sox win tonight. I am confident that they can take the game and the series from the Yankees. I am just not sure I could live with Greg if they don't.

Posted by: your mother at October 20, 2004 04:28 PMSo glad for you that the Sox won! We were also rooting for them since my brother went to yeshiva in Rhode Island and we hate the Yankees.
Posted by: Sara at October 21, 2004 09:40 AMI am a converted Red Sox fan. When I was seven and we lived in Springfield Mass, I loved the Red Sox. I don't think I really knew much about them, other than Yaz.
When we moved to Baltimore, the O's were ascendant. They finished in second in 1968 and then were in the playoffs for 5 of the next 6 years. My Red Sox loyalties faded for the O's. Lately being an O's fan hasn't been so much fun.
I can't blame my boys for becoming Yankees fans. Like you, I'm also in a mixed marriage. And the boys, when they became aware of baseball, their grandfather's team was much better than their father's team; so they're Yankee fans. (My oldest daughter, bless her, is unswervingly faithful to her father and hates the Yankees.)
In the years 1998-2001 (or so) we'd wake the boys up (actually only one ever woke up, the other one could sleep through an earthquake) to watch the final out of the Yankees' (seemingly) inevitable triumph.
Imagine what happened in 2001 when we woke one up for the last out against the Diamondbacks with Mariano Rivera pitching ... He was incredibly distraught fearing the teasing he'd get the next day. (The Yankees have won 26 WS, I told him, no other team is close.)
I think the family is taking the series loss rather well. The close games were tougher for them to take.
