Cicadas: For the Record

I don't know if the archives of this blog will still be around in 17 years when the cicadas return, but I wanted to put this year's cicada experience on the record so I can look back and remember and tell my kids that they weren't THAT bad.

So, all in all they lasted around a month. The newer developments barely had any. The first week wasn't so bad. The second and third weeks they were flying around like mad and many, many, many landed on me (I don't know why I am so lucky) on and around various body parts (no joke). It was annoying, but I perfected the art of the "flick off" (no not that kind you crazies!) and it became almost a game to me. The sound was deafening on some days yet it usually died down when darkness came. The smell was pretty bad but not bad enough that I couldn't leave my home. Ezra grew accustomed to the cicadas but did not attempt to pick them up or play with them. Gila shrieked every time she saw one and I had to carry her from the house to the car and from the car to the house for a month. The last week they were around but not that crazy. Now they are all but gone and I gotta say, I sort of miss the little guys...
