I signed up for a G-mail account yesterday. I don't really have any intention of using it at this point but I got an invitation to sign up and I didn't want my name to be taken (ya hear that all you pennygersh's out there!). Anyway, this morning I went to check my yahoo e-mail account; which, up until last evening had 89% of the storage capacity filled. When I logged on I noticed that the format is now prettier and Yahoo mail is offering more storage space. 100 MB to be exact. Because I don't know the difference between MB and my right toe I don't remember what the storage capacity was before today. What I do know is that now, even though I have all of my existing e-mails on the account, I have only taken up 5/100% of the storage capacity.
I can only assume yahoo is being "magnanimous" because of Gmail, but Gmail is still offering a way more generous 1000 MB for FREE! (whereas if you want to up the amount of MB on yahoo, you have to pay for the account). So my question is, why is Yahoo doing this? They are offering something but it is still no way as desirable as Gmail.
Someone please explain this to me before I lose sleep tonight- I can't afford to lose sleep.
Posted by peninah at June 15, 2004 05:12 PMYahoo is trying to stem the tide of defactors to Google. Yahoo's paid service is twice as large as Google's free one.
I'll probably stick with yahoo now.
Posted by: Greg at June 15, 2004 07:42 PMHow'd you get a gmail account? I just tried again, and I'm still not special enough!
Posted by: Lara at June 15, 2004 08:00 PMWhile yahoo's 100mb is only 1/10 the storage space gmail offers, it's way more than enough for the average person to ever really need. If you're happy with Yahoo, stick with it and don't lose sleep over it.
But like Greg said, yahoo is just keeping up with the joneses. And before the increase to 100mb, you had 6mb of storage space and that was apparently enough for you, so really...sleep tight.
Posted by: dabrettman at June 16, 2004 09:35 AMThanks for reminding me of the numbers, DaBrettman- it makes it clearer. This actually helps me because I was constantly going over my storage space in yahoo so now it will be easier and I wont have to delete things every day. I will stick with yahoo for now.
Lara- somehow Greg got an account and he was able to send me an invitation to join. Maybe if you divulge some secrets, Greg can send you an invitation as well ;)
Posted by: peninah at June 16, 2004 10:03 AMI'll tell you how to get an account. For now, they are testing the program. Since blogger is owned by Google (I think) they offer all blogger users an account. And every account that signs up can invite two people to open an account. I've been using Gmal for the past month or two and like it much better than Yahoo. More user friendly, and it has some features that Yahoo doesn't have. I am able to invite one more person, so if anyone wants an account, let me know.
